Sex, Drugs and Oral Cancer

with Robert Whitman

Dental PodcastTwo topics that are very important to us at the Thriving Dentist Show are new technology advances and oral cancer screening.

Running Time: 50:52 min

This interview with Robert Whitman combines both of these topics in a compelling interview. Robert brings a medical engineering mindset to the dental profession. He has both a B.S and M.S.E. in biomedical engineering and began his career at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center using fluorescence technology to detect cervical cancer. He now serves as CEO and Director of Clinical Education for OralID and is using fluorescence technology to screen for oral cancer. In this interview, Gary and Robert discuss recent trends in oral cancer including the reason for the recent increase in oral cancer cases from people outside of the historic ‘at risk’ groups. Robert explains how advances in fluorescence technology can be incorporated into your practice as a screening tool.

Saving Lives by Diagnosing Oral Cancer

with Linda Miles and Robin Morrison

Dental PodcastThe incidence of Oral Cancer is rising here in the United States and Internationally as well. In the US this year over 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with Oral Cancer and sadly, over 9,000 of those diagnosed will die. The good news is that Oral Cancer has a very high treatment success rate when detected early.

Another dimension of Oral Cancer is that the risk profile is changing. Traditional risk groups included smokers, chewing tobacco users and moderate to heavy alcohol consumption. However, in the past 5 years more than 50% of all diagnosed cases of Oral Cancer been patients who never smoked, used chewing tobacco or had moderate to heavy alcohol use. One possible reason is the link between Oral Cancer and HPV.

Running Time: 48:53 min

The special guests on this Thriving Dentist Show are Linda Miles and Robin Morrison, the founders of the Oral Cancer Cause (OCC) Foundation. OCC’s purpose is to improve the quality of life for oral cancer patients through financial support so that they may face the world with peace and dignity during and after medical treatment. Both Linda and Robin are deeply committed to the cause of Oral Cancer diagnosis and treatment due to the fact they have both lost family members to Oral Cancer.

Building Your Practice by Helping Your Patients Achieve Great Health

with Dr. Dan Sindelar

TDS Logo 600X600This podcast is all about helping you develop a practice that provides personal, professional and financial fulfillment, or as Gary likes to say……a THRIVING practice. When it comes to professional fulfillment I imagine that nothing could be more fulfilling and exciting than helping a patient achieve great health! Today we know that a patient’s dental health is directly related to their overall health. We have known this for some time now, but today the body of scientific evidence is more powerful than ever. Today we know that if a patient has poor oral health they could also have issues with heart disease, stroke diabetes, early-term birth and cancer, among other very serious health issues. The bad bacteria in the mouth is not just in the mouth but it is circulating throughout the entire body, leading to many of these general health issues. Today we are so very fortunate to have Dr. Dan Sindelar as our special guest on the show. Dr. Sindelar is the co-founder of the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health and he is a leader in connecting the dental world with the medical world. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Sindelar is absolutely passionate about helping his patients achieve great health! Welcome Dr. Sindelar!

Improving Oral Health Globally

with Dr. Dan Fischer

TDS Logo 600X600Some companies understand that there’s a lot more to business than making a profit. Ultradent is one of those companies. For more than 30 years Ultradent has been innovating and creating quality products. They are a truly an international leader in producing quality dental products for Dentists throughout the world. We are absolutely thrilled to have the founder of Ultradent, Dr. Dan Fischer as our guest today on the Thriving Dentist Show!

Running Time 57:48

Gary has a great relationship with Dr. Fischer and from the moment he met him, Gary knew that Dr. Fischer had a deep commitment to helping patients enjoy great oral health. The first time Gary heard Dr. Fischer lecture, he took over 10 pages of notes. If you are driving while you are listening to this you may want to pull over, take out your notepad and start taking notes! This show will be epic! Welcome Dr. Fischer!

The story of how Ultradent was founded is an incredible story and we’ll let Dr. Fischer tell that story in just a minute, but the really wonderful part of that story is that Ultradent was founded to meet a need. There were no products on the market that could predictably control bleeding and sulcular fluid. So, Dr. Fisher invented one! There is one more aspect of Dr. Fischer’s life that I’d like to provide in this introduction.

Dr. Fischer and his amazing team are driven by an extremely strong moral code. They live their lives by the same core values that drive Ultradent; Integrity, Quality, Hard Work, Innovation, and Care. Thank you for being here and for setting an example for our industry.

Getting Serious About Perio Disease

with Dr. Tom Nabors

TDS Logo 600X600The link between oral and general health has been something that those in the dental profession have known for quite some time now. The great news is that the general public is beginning to understand this connection! It is all over the popular media. Hardly a day goes by that there isn’t some major article in a magazine or a feature on the news. Just within the last year, Whoopi Goldberg has discussed the connection between oral and general health on The View, Diane Sawyer and Dr. Timothy Johnson had a feature on Good Morning America, ABC News has run syndicated features on the evening news, and Men’s Health has published articles about this in their magazine. This is all great news because the public is beginning to pay attention! On this episode we were very fortunate to have a special guest on the show who is a world-renowned authority on periodontal disease, Dr. Tom Nabors.

Running Time 41:29

Research shows that perio disease is a silent epidemic in the world today. Some data indicates that 80% of the adult population has some degree of perio disease. Let me use more direct language. That means that it’s possible that 4 out of 5 people have an active infection in their mouth! And this infection is not just in their mouth, it’s throughout their circulatory system. While this may seem like bad news, the good news is that we have new science that can help our listeners diagnose and treat perio disease. We were very fortunate to have Dr. Nabors as our guest to share with you some of his passion for perio and how you can help your patients have great oral health and also improve their general health as well.

Your Spit Is Awesome

with Anastasia Turchetta

TDS Logo 600X600Gary learned many years ago that the hygiene department is the backbone of a successful dental practice! This is even more true today. The hygiene department is the primary point of contact for patients with the practice and a successful hygiene department will keep patients active and positively engaged with the office. Today, we are very fortunate to have Anastasia Turchetta as our special guest on the show! Anastasia has the unique ability to relate to with dental consumers as well as Dentists and Hygienists about Oral Health. This skill was developed from her 22+ years of experience in clinical hygiene. A couple of years ago she created her hugely popular videos on youtube called ‘Hump Day Happenings’ where she shares her passion for Oral Health with consumers.

Running Time 45:51

One of the reasons why the hygiene department is so important today is because of the connection between oral and systemic health. Today we know that if a patient has gum disease they have a much higher risk of experiencing general health concerns such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The general media has tuned in to this topic as evidenced by Whoopi Goldberg talking about it on the View as well as much more general media coverage. Gary and Anastasia will share new information with our listeners today about this connection and why it is time to get serious about diagnosing and treating gum disease.

Why is dental hygiene so much more than just teeth cleaning? It involves so many other aspects of health, including oral cancer screening which is one of the most treatable forms of cancer when caught early.
